Chapter Thirty-Three

Wyott

“Did you remember to light the candles?” Cora called from the kitchen.

I laughed, shaking my head. “Yes,” I called back. “The first time you asked…” I paused for emphasis. “An hour ago.”

Annoyance bristled down the bond before I heard her shout back. “Don’t be a prick, I was just making sure.”

I stood from the chaise in our sitting room and tossed another log on the fire. The embers sparked and swept up the chimney in a flurry before I heard Cora curse in the kitchen.

I closed the fireplace cage and ran in to see if she was okay. I was met by the image of my mate with an apron tied loosely around her waist and a pan of baked goods on the counter.

“What’s wrong?” I asked as I moved to see if she was okay.

Cora turned to me with flour marks on her cheek and forehead, her eyes wide. “They didn’t rise the way they were supposed to.”

The pastries were flat, but the chocolate could be seen melting from the insides.

I walked toward her and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her to my chest.

“They’re perfect.”

She narrowed her eyes up at me, resting her hands on my shoulders. “They are so clearly not perfect, Wyott,” she huffed. “They’re a disaster.”

“But I’m sure they’ll still be delicious, darling. And that’s all that counts.”

She scoffed. “That is not all that counts! This is Evaline’s first time here, I want to make sure everything is perfect.”

I dropped my eyelids at her. “Evaline quite literally ate rabbit over a campfire on our trip. She’ll love everything you’ve made tonight.”

Cora sighed. “Fine, you’re probably right.”

I smirked at her and opened my mouth to speak, but before I could a rumble shook the land below us. We locked eyes but the quake was minor, so we waited for it to pass like we always did.

Gods, what was causing these?

After the world stilled again, I turned to her. “I’m almost always right. Besides, you’re perfect enough as it is. No reason to stress over making things around you perfect, too.”

She lightly smacked my chest. “That was Gods awful.”

I shrugged. “You’ll have that after going months away from home.” I dipped my head to kiss her.

“You’ve been home for weeks now. Surely you’re sick of me,” she said as she looked up at me through her lashes. The sight of her in my arms, flour sprinkled across her face and her flirty eyes looking up at me sent blood straight to my cock.

“I could spend eternity by your side and never tire of you,” I said as I fanned my hands over her back and pulled her against my chest.

Cora grinned. “Even if my pastries are flat?”

I nodded seriously before the corners of my mouth tugged up. “Even if your pastries are flat.”

A hard knock sounded at the door.

“Horrible timing,” I grumbled as I pulled away from her. Cora snickered behind me as she ran around me and pulled the apron off. We stopped at the door and I turned to her before pulling it open to wipe the flour from her face.
